Did You Know?
Skipping or delaying meals can cause low blood sugar (hypoglycemia) if you are taking insulin or oral medications that help your body produce insulin.
Low blood sugar can make you feel dizzy, shaky, nervous,
irritable, sweaty, hungry, or confused. Unrecognized and untreated low blood
sugar can be very dangerous. Always carry a source of treatment with you. To
relieve your symptoms, take 15 gm of a fast-acting, fat-free carbohydrate
promptly. Some choices:
- 3-4 glucose tablets
- ½ cup soda (not diet soda)
- ½ cup juice
- 1 cup skim or 1% milk
- 6-8 lifesavers (chewed)
- 2 tablespoons of raisins
- 1 tablespoon honey, sugar, or jelly
Then wait 15 minutes and
re-check your blood sugar with your blood glucose meter. If your blood sugar is
still too low, take another 15 grams of fat-free carbohydrate and re-check after
15 minutes. Make sure you eat a snack or meal so your numbers don’t dip again.
If you are having unexplained low blood sugars or they are happening to you more
than once a week, talk with your health care team to learn how to prevent this
from happening.
